December 2018 newsletter

Dear members of the IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Computer Communications, the year-end of 2018 is approaching and we would like to inform you about the following news concerning TCCC activities:

  1. Information on TCCC membership and mailing list subscription
  • Awards at IEEE LCN 2018
  • Submission deadlines of upcoming TCCC supported conferences
  • Updates to the TCCC mailing list policy

1. Information on TCCC membership and mailing list subscription

As you know, TCCC maintains a moderated mailing list (tccc-announce@computer.org) where TCCC-related announcements are posted infrequently. If you are a member of the IEEE Computer Society’s Technical Committee on Computer Communications (TCCC) you are also a subscriber of this mailing list. Recently, we checked the subscription database and noticed that there is a considerable number of subscribers who are currently not members of the TCCC. Also in conformance to data protection regulations, we plan to “clean-up” the mailing list in January 2019. This means that we will remove all subscribers who are not currently registered TCCC members. Should this apply to you, you will receive a message which will inform about the removal from the TCCC mailing list.

Did you know? Joining an IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee (TC) is free! It is independent of IEEE or IEEE Computer Society membership! Click https://cs-tccc.org/membership/ for more information – and after logging into your IEEE account you can check your TC membership status!

If you think that you currently are not a member of TCCC, we would be happy if you join now and you will stay on the TCCC mailing list!

2. Awards at IEEE LCN 2018

The 43rd IEEE Conference on Local Computer Networks (LCN), sponsored by TCCC, was held in early October 2018, in Chicago, IL, USA.

The LCN main conference best paper award was given to Kang Chen, Xin Xing, Mijanur Palash, Jianwei Liu and James Martin for their paper entitled “Improving Wireless Network Performance Under MPTCP Based Multipath Access”. Kang Chen from the Southern Illinois University Carbondale (USA) gave the talk for the winning paper – congratulations!

In the plenary session, a total of seven demo contributions were presented with the aim of providing demonstrations that validate important research issues and/or show innovative prototypes. Here, the audience has the ability to vote for the best demo. In Chicago, the team of Cenk Gündogan, Peter Kietzmann, Thomas C. Schmidt, Martine Lenders, Hauke Petersen, Matthias Wählisch, Michael Frey and Felix Shzu-Juraschek received the best demo award for their contribution entitled “Resilient Machine-to-Machine Communication for an Information-centric Industrial IoT”.

Furthermore, TCCC sponsored a total of six student participation grants for IEEE LCN 2018. Students with an accepted paper applying for such a grant were selected based on a detailed motivation of their research interests in relation to LCN and a recommendation by their advisor. More information on TCCC student participation grants and the awardees is available at https://cs-tccc.org/sponsored/spg/

3. Submission deadlines of upcoming TCCC supported conferences:

4. Updates to the TCCC mailing list policy:

Recently, we updated the description of our policies for using the TCCC membership mailing list. See https://cs-tccc.org/mailinglist/ for more information.

We would like to stimulate more activities on the TCCC mailing list coming from the members, being valuable for the members – in addition to the usual announcements concerning TCCC-sponsored symposia, conferences or workshops.

Members are invited to directly use the mailing list (following the above mentioned policies) for job offers and calls related to TCCC-sponsored symposia, conferences or workshops. We also solicit contributions for our TCCC newsletter. This maybe any piece of information like a conference report, information about awards handed out at a conference or any other topic that has relevance for the TCCC members. Please have a look at the questionnaire that we have prepared for you to submit your input to the TCCC newsletter. If you are missing an important topic that should be mentioned as well, please let us know! We plan to send out a TCCC newsletter about every two months, i.e. six times a year.

If you have any other item to discuss on TCCC activities, please also contact us!

Best regards
Andreas Reinhardt (TCCC Chair)
Matthias Frank (TCCC Communications Chair)
